The omega3 Health lifestyle

A Food exclusion diet is recommended, since food sensitivities can often be an underlying factor, especially in childhood asthma.

In one study, 91 percent of children with a respiratory allergy found their symptoms improved on a six-Week diet that excluded common problem foods, including grains and dairy products.

Fish oils may help, since asthma may be related to an imbalance in fatty acids in the diet.  Excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids (found in vegetable oils) and a relative lack of omega-3 fats (found in oily fish and some nuts and seeds) may promote inflammation of the airways and aggravate asthma. Try cutting back on margarine and vegetable oils and eating at least two portions of oily fish a week (such as salmon or mackerel). Children should take 300mg of fish oil per day. A number of studies suggest that this is worth trying.

Fish oil is an omega3 fatty acid and is known for promoting good health in the body, but it is also known for helping the body to burn fat as fuel…

Crete, Greece: A cold spot for Heart Disease

The Mediterranean diet has often made the news as one that can reduce the risk of heart disease. A researcher by the name of Ancel Keys began the landmark study called The Seven Countries Study in 1958. After 40 years, the conclusion was that the men who lived the longest and were the healthiest were living in 11 villages on the island of Crete. This island is the source of the true Mediterranean diet. Components of this diet and their health benefits are Olive oil, Wild seafood and snails, Wild greens or Horta, Rusks, Cheese, Legumes, Greek yoghurt drizzled with a little honey or fruit preserves.

One thing is common here, all contain omega3!

Japan is a Cold Spot for Breast and Prostate Cancers.

Much has been written in recent years about the Okinawa lifestyle due to the fact that they are among the longest-lived people in the world. Among other positive health benefits, the Okanwina diet appears to be protective against breast and prostate cancers. Several elements of the diet contribute to this phenomenon.

Fish is abundant in the Okinawan diet, again bringing in the omega3 fats as well as adequate vitamin D intake.

Try this for a range of good foods:

  • Eat small portions
  • Make meat a condiment, not the main meal
  • Eat foods that are as unprocessed as possible
  • Eat good fats, particularly omega3
  • Eat dark green and other colorful fruits and vegetables
  • Get the good bacteria in yoghurt or fermented foods
  • Eat whole grains
  • Use healing herbs and spices
  • Whole foods are better than supplements
  • Live an active lifestyle

omega3 fish oil for depression and ADHD

Evidence is starting to build that links depression with abnormalities in fatty acid metabolism and deficiencies in the dietary fatty acid intake.

The omega3 essential fatty acids, such as EPA found in oily fish, such as salmon and mackerel, seem to be most important in this respect. In countries where people eat plenty of oily fish,  such as Japan or China, have substantially fewer rates of depression.

Furthermore, in general, people who eat fish regularly are less likely to report feeling depressed. In addition, low levels of omega3 fatty acids are often found in the blood of depressed individuals.

Supplementing the diet with omega3 fatty acids, especially EPA, is often useful in treating depression. A dose of 1 g of EPA (found in about 3g of concentrated fish oil) each day may be helpful.

ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a behavioural condition that includes hyperactivity, acting impulsively and an inability to concentrate for a certain duration of time.

It impacts numerous more boys than girls and because of the trouble a person with ADHD has in focusing on or accomplishing specific tasks; it can affect their progression at school.

Fish oil contains the all-important Omega3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) both of which are needed for healthy brain development and function.

These are all important fatty acids that the body can’t develop itself, so the body to source them from your diet.

Omega3’s can be obtained in rich amounts in oily fish, such as mackerel, salmon and tuna.

Nearly of all of us are not acquiring adequate amounts of the Omega3’s in our diet, and or else, we are taking in too much of Omega 6 fatty acids, which can be discovered in ample supply in vegetable oils like corn oil and sunflower oil, meat products and processed foods.

EPA assists the brain to work and increases the blood circulation around the body, especially blood circulation to the brain.

The brain consists largely of DHA, which is essential for healthy brain development.

Both EPA and DHA are every bit crucial, however, we can develop DHA in our bodies if we are getting enough EPA.

Whenever there is a deficiency of the correct form of fatty acids that the brain requires to develop and operate in good order, such as EPA, it will attempt to construct alternate fatty acids on what it has to function with.

This is evidently not perfect if we are not acquiring the correct fats through our diet.

Many reports suggest that high excessive amounts of these alternate fatty acids can be detected in children with ADHD. This would seem to be connected to a diet plentiful in Omega 6 fatty acids and a poor supply in Omega3’s.

Males likewise require a lot more essential fatty acids than females, which may explain the reason how come ADHD is most common in boys.

The health benefits of consuming fish oil supplements are authenticated and the UK government is presently debating issuing fish oil to schoolchildren as a widespread initiative to better nutrition.

Numerous surveys carried out in the UK indicated that children consuming high EPA fish oil had raised concentration, bettered their exam results and showed less hyperactive behaviour in the classroom.

Research keeps going but there is an increasing knowledge of how high EPA fish oil can assist to relieve the symptoms of ADHD and other brain associated disorders. One Australian field of study even indicated that fish oil may be just as effective as Ritalin in addressing ADHD, and possibly even to a greater extent…

Omega 3 fish Oil for Depression, ADD and ADHD

I recently took a phone call from a customer who was making some enquiries about the EPA capsules for mental health purposes, so naturally I had to ask a few personal questions to try and get to the bottom of what the problem was and whether not in my opinion the capsules would be of any help.

Chronic indigestion

What was interesting about this was that after much questioning and digging around, it became apparent that this person suffered from chronic indigestion and very poor bowel movements (I am not sure which way round the IBS symptoms were).

This person thought that by getting their mental health sorted, this would in turn help with their bowel – stomach – indigestion problems (this is something that they had already seen their doctor for and had received some kind of indigestion medication).

When I suggested that it could be the other way round, i.e. that if they sorted out their stomach problems then the mood swings etc might clear up or at least be a damn sight better then they are now, the customer was very interested in this and asked what the rational behind this was.

I went on to explain that although I am not a doctor I am someone who has suffered with both these problems myself, this was mainly caused by really bad food intolerance, food allergies and a severe Candida problem. (Please no emails telling me Candida does not exist!  I have just recently come back from an exhibition at the royal botanical gardens in Edinburgh called “the amazing world of fungi” where they had a whole section about Candida albicans and the dangers if this fungi- bacteria  gets out of balance in the body!)

In fact, I would go as far as to say that once the Candida was under control the food allergies were so much better than they had ever been!! When you research these problems in-depth you will find that food allergies and bowel inflammation can cause the tiny virili that absorb food in the bowel to “flatten”, so once the virili are flattened the body finds it very hard to absorb nutrients, add to this a really unhealthy overgrowth of “bad bacteria” i.e. Candida, (in the bowel) and you have a recipe for disaster!

So, hence the body is now potentially in a state of possible permanent inflammation and hardly any nutrients are being absorbed, it’s no wonder that you could end up with multiple problems including mental health problems.

If you are still unsure why a lack of correct nutrients can cause these problems then look at it this way, if you put diesel in a petrol car then the car will stop working properly, the body is the same, it needs a fine balance of nutrients and water to function correctly and if you disturb this balance enough then it could give you problems!

I went on to ask about the customer’s diet and they replied that their diet was really good and healthy, but yet they still suffered from chronic indigestion and IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) symptoms, so I suggested that they take a test for Candida over growth and that food allergy testing was also looked into.

We went on to discuss food allergies in some depth and what allergies there could be. I was quite straight forward and said it could be anything! Absolutely anything!  Spices, sugar, wheat, dairy .. You can take your pick when it comes to being allergic or not tolerant to something!

So the conversation progressed to the customer also saying that they had a quite bad energy crash later in the day (not surprising when you take into account the possibilities mentioned above, notice the word possibilities as without testing you are walking around blind) so I suggested a diet regime change to see if that helped. I recommended starting the day with a little bit of sugar free cereal and a homemade power shake packed to the brim with whole natural “super foods” as this again is something that I do and it works very well for me!

I personally mix hemp seeds, Chia seeds, pumpkin seeds and flax seeds with a little bit of soy and pea protein powered with added vitamins. The brand I use is Natures Own as it is dairy and gluten free.  I blend the seeds to a fine powder and then add water or rice milk. As I do a lot of sport I need quite a lot of protein for my muscle to repair in time for the next session so I take two of these types of protein power shakes per day.  I try to avoid refined sugar or sugar or any kind due to the Candida (once you are prone to Candida it is very hard to keep it under control and it just loves sugar!)

Another area to give some serious consideration to if you are having stomach – bowel problems is the bacteria H pylori, but that’s for another newsletter.

From a personal point of view when my bowels and stomach feel balanced and I feel like I am getting all the correct nutrients then I also notice a vast improvement in the following symptoms, mood swings, headaches, anxiety and irritability. I also have better quality sleep, amazing skin and hair and enjoy a huge boost to my overall energy levels.

So the moral is if you give your body the right high quality fuel at the right time and also find out if there is something that is upsetting your stomach then your mental and overall physical health might just improve !!
